Art Department
Education through the Visual Arts is stimulating, exciting and interesting. Its all about: Expressing ideas/designs/concepts visually. Developing sensibility and an understanding of your world. Developing knowledge of Art and Design from the past, which can help broaden cultural understanding. Developing personal skills in image making which can be confidence building and hugely satisfying. Enabling you to express yourselves confidently through a variety of media. Risk Taking. And, after all, isn’t it important to capitalise on your creative potential.
Syllabus Lower School The course encourages the understanding of drawing from observation and the development of ideas from primary source material. After all, there is no other way to develop creative skills. A wide-ranging approach to visual work is essential for experience and for the discovery of strength.
We offer a variety of approaches and disciplines: Drawing painting sculpture textiles collage printmaking contextual studies computer aided art and design…...to name but a few. And finally a stimulating environment in which to work where high standards and the production of seriously produced creative work – best effort – is the norm. This provides a strong foundation course for the examination syllabuses: GCSE…. AS…..A2:
Art and Design is a broad based course allowing students to work in many disciplines and media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, computer aided art and design, work in 3 dimensions, fashion design and graphic design. 60% Coursework Students are expected to produce units of work. These units must demonstrate the student’s ability to investigate, record, analyse, experiment, and develop their responses into exciting, creative final outcomes.
We encourage students to work from direct experience at all times and to draw influence form the work of artists, craftspeople and designers or other cultures wherever possible. To aid this process we run visits to museums and galleries. 40% Examination Students are to produce another unit of work from a starting point set by the exam board under timed conditions Prep time and a set number of hours for the final outcome. The exam has to be linked to the work of an artist, designer, craftsperson. E Dukes.
