Aims

To provide, through the study of Biology, a coherent educational experience for all pupils, which enables them to acquire sufficient understanding and knowledge to:
  • achieve examination grades in keeping with their ability;
  • become useful citizens in a technological world, able to take or develop aninformed interest in matters of biological import;
  • recognise the usefulness, and limitations, of scientific methods and appreciate their applicability in other disciplines and in everyday life;
  • be encouraged to pursue and be suitably prepared for further studies in biology;
  • recognise that the study of Biology is relevant to everyday life.
To develop skills and abilities that:
  • are relevant to the study, practice and application of biology;
  • are useful in every day life;
  • encourage safe practice.
To stimulate:
  • curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Biology and its methods of enquiry;
  •  interest in, and care for, the environment.
To promote an awareness that:
  • the study and practice of Biology are co-operative and cumulative activities and are subject to social, economic, technological, ethical and cultural influences and limitations;
  • the applications of Biology may be both beneficial and detrimental to the individual, the community and the environment;
  • the concepts of science are of a developing and sometimes transient nature.
