Chesterton Cup Final 2006
3 August 2006
Cricket XI Retain the Chesterton Cup
The 1st XI retained the Chesterton Cup in emphatic style at New Road on Sunday 4th June against Monmouth School. On a good pitch Captain Andy Ford decided to bat and, although there was early movement, the decision soon proved a good one as openers Tom Brain and debutant Ollie Flower blossomed in the warm sunshine. The pair put on 145 for the first wicket, Flower playing superbly in his first ever match for the 1st team, scoring 68 fluent runs. Brain struck the ball powerfully for an excellent 82 with Neil Pinner striking a very rapid 51. Ali Wilkinson scampered swiftly between the wickets at the end to set an imposing 247 for 6.
The Monmouth reply started rapidly aided by some wayward RGS bowling but Captain Ford’s off spinners put on the brake, applied some pressure and made the breakthrough. Wickets then fell regularly, the RGS fielding rising to new heights and Monmouth ended up 54 runs short.
RGS has now won the Chesterton Cup more times (5) than any other School since its inception in 1991.
