First Fencing Match

The fencing club had its first match at the West Midlands Centre of Excellence, King Edward's School, Birmingham on Thursday the 1st, November. The centre of excellence is designed for fencers who are already part of a club somewhere else, and attend for extra tuition and more experience. Even their youngest fencers had been fencing for some time.

Our largely inexperienced squad (Richard Nutter had only fenced once before!) was divided into three teams of three. Within the team, everyone fences everyone else, so everyone had three matches, each match lasting three minutes. The event was a relay, so the scores were added up, with the first match being first to 5, second match first to 10 and so on.

All teams acquitted themselves well - indeed, our “second” team only narrowly lost by 43 points to 45. More importantly, everyone enjoyed themselves and made a good impression. I anticipate this will be the first of many fixtures.

Stop Press

This weekend, Gabby Kettle took part in the Bath Leon Paul Epee at Milfield School, Street and finished 3rd in the under 15 Girls Epee. This is a very impressive result.
