Fingers on the buzzers
30 January 2008
Two teams from RGSAO met head-to-head in the local final of the national Schools Challenge competition for 2008 this week. Facing opposition from the King's School and Colston's Collegiate School in Bristol, RGSAO proved too strong for the opposition with a mixture of amazingly varied and obscure general knowledge and lightning-fast trigger fingers. The depth of RGSAO talent was such that either of the two teams could have won.
Schools Challenge is very similar in format to University Challenge, though the quizmaster is usually a bit friendlier than Jeremy Paxman. The winning RGSAO team (Patrick Neary, Max Howells, Dominic Lowe and Ollie Steele) are now Severn Regional Champions, an area which covers Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol. Captain of the team Patrick Neary, who lives in Bewdley, said: 'We're really looking forward to pitting our wits against some other schools in the inter-regional finals in April. The whole thing's a bit nerve-racking, but you get a great feeling when you're on a roll'.
