v Uppingham
Saturday 12th January

1st XI won 2-1
2nd XI lost 4-6
U16 drew 0-0

The RGSAO 1st XI got their Mercian League campaign off to a winning start at Uppingham with a 2-1 victory. On a small, sloping, heavy pitch RGSAO began slowly and were unable to turn the majority of possession into goals, but took the lead midway through the half after slick passing between Jacob Saunders and Chris Danks allowed Alex Crawshaw to steal in a the far post to give us the lead from close range. Playing down the slope in the second half the lead was extended by a fabulous 20 yard strike from Will Ford which left the Uppingham goalkeeper stranded. Further chances to increase the lead came and went and with 20 minutes to go, Uppingham pulled a goal back from a penalty. In the remainder of the game RGSAO defended strongly with Rudy Hercik and James Mitchell outstanding, as well as looking dangerous on the break with Chris Danks’ pace causing the home team particular problems. This was a disciplined and strong performance from RGSAO in difficult conditions. A good start to the season.
