Leadership
RGSAO values activities outside the classroom hugely. On site clubs and societies range from skateboarding to jazz bands. In Year Nine all pupils select either the Duke of Edinburgh Award or one of the three sections of the CCF, features of both of which are their expeditions. Perhaps the most challenging of these is the Ten Tors Challenge, into which up to three teams are entered annually drawn from Years Ten, Twelve and Thirteen. Sixth Form pupils also participate in the World Challenge programme.
A wide range of residential trips is offered each year including exchanges to France, Spain and Germany, and visits to a ski resort and water sports centre. Most years see sports and cultural tours abroad with recent regions visited including Malta, Cuba, Normandy, the Andes, Himalayas, India and New Zealand.
The wide variety of such trips allows pupils to develop both their physical and mental resources in testing circumstances. This encourages them to discover much more about the value of leadership and teamwork whilst building their independence and self-discipline, characteristics we value greatly.
