Mathematics Department

The central aim of the Mathematics department is the fostering of good quality Mathematics, a policy that we can fulfil thanks to Academic qualifications, experience and expertise of the staff. The KS3 syllabus is openly advanced, going beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum in both content and depth. At GCSE, too, there is more emphasis placed on Algebra than is necessary for the course, giving students a better chance of success should they choose A level. Throughout the school there are opportunities to enter the UK Mathematics Trust competitions, and several students each year go through to the second or third stage competitions for the different age groups.

Groups are mixed ability in Year seven, partially setted in Year Eight and fully setted in Years Nine to Eleven. The top set takes some of the AS modules in Year Eleven alongside GCSE. With the abolition of Intermediate Tier all sets take Higher Tier GCSE.

Around half the students choose to go on to AS level each year, with many continuing to A level. In recent years several students have gone on to study Mathematics at University (including some to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group Universities).

As a result of the emphasis on good quality mathematics, and thanks to the specialist knowledge of staff, the department has enjoyed very good examination results for several years. These results have enabled students to go on to study their chosen subject at top Universities throughout Britain.
