Music at the Royal Grammar School is going through a very exciting period of growth at present. Any musical pupil arriving here next September would be well placed to take advantage of these new developments.
Staffed by three permanent and 13 visiting music teachers (jazz/pop singing and bass guitar have just been added), the Music Department runs 13 diverse music ensembles : School Choir Junior Choir Girls A Cappella Boys A Cappella The Perrins Ensemble (a Sixth form chamber ensemble) Joint Orchestra (with The Alice Ottley School) Junior String Ensemble Big Band Senior Jazz Ensemble (The Watermelons) Junior Jazz ensemble (Little Big Band) Saxophone Ensemble 12 piece Mowtown/funk outfit (The Project) Percussion ensemble (The Crash) A theory group also runs to help pupils through theory of music up to Grade 5 level.
Within the classroom more and more use of the school’s Apple Mac resources are to be utilized to help pupils with composing and recording. “Sibelius” and “Garage Band” are the two preferred programmes. An exceptionally large teaching room enables classes to switch between formal and practical work with ease.
A Level teaching is a strong area. The Department is particularly well resourced with teaching texts and small classes enable teachers to tailor teaching styles to individual pupils’ needs. The Department runs visits to concerts at Birmingham Symphony Hall and our own concert programme enables pupils to fulfil the Edexel performing requirements with ease.
Opportunities are now available for able students to take some conducting lessons with the Director of Music and also to take charge of the Departments’ increasing PA and recording activities.
