Physics Department
Physics is the fundamental science that attempts to understand the way in which the universe operates. It does this by constructing laws and models that fit our observations. As time passes, our observations become more precise and greater in range ‹ often requiring laws and ideas to be modified or extended. Physics allows us to make predictions about our world and offers us an understanding of the underlying principles upon which it is based.
Although physics is a pure science, its ideas underpin much of technology, which is mankind's means of solving its problems. It is, therefore, important for technologists and engineers, who actually design solutions to problems, to have a thorough understanding of the principles of physics.
At RGSAO we endeavour to promote good observational and analytical skills from the first year, with a firm emphasis on practical work. The pupils are encouraged to draw their own conclusions and to relate their work to everyday situations. Physics remains a popular subject at GCSE and many choose to continue their study of the subject into the sixth form.
