Getting Started

Our warm, friendly Nursery provides the ideal start to your child’s education. Bright and exciting with direct access to a secure walled garden. This is where our youngest pupils begin to develop basic skills and gain confidence and independence. Our dedicated staff help children learn through play and ensure the children are ready to move to the slightly more formal learning environment provided in Reception and then on to Key Stage 1.

From the start we ensure children are offered a wealth of opportunities and our highly regarded Forest School helps them learn in a different and more adventurous way. Sport, music and art together with the traditional academic subjects give a good balance to the day which is primarily spent with the class teacher. Particular emphasis is given to reading as the cornerstone of each child’s academic development.

Moving Up

On entering Key Stage 2 the children’s curriculum is expanded to include a wider range of subjects. Numeracy and Literacy are still the foundation skills but music, drama and French gain more prominence as do academic subjects such as science, ICT, history and geography.

We have a strong learning development department which ensures that all children receive individual encouragement, whether it be in an area in which they are experiencing difficulties or one in which they are particularly gifted.

Sport and physical education become more structured from Year Three with particular emphasis on team sports. All children are encouraged to learn the value of participating as well as winning and the variety of sports on offer helps them develop a range of skills.

Moving On

The vast majority of our pupils move on to our Senior School at the end of Year Six and our current policy is that no entry examinations are necessary providing satisfactory progress has been made.

We find that the happiest pupils are invariably those for whom the School and home create a close partnership. Throughout your child’s time with us we will have provided full written reports annually and many opportunities for you to speak with us about his or her progress. The Heads of both the Junior and Senior Schools are happy to discuss your child’s future and to suggest alternatives if RGSAO is not the right option for them.
