Information for Applicants

RGS The Grange is the Junior School of RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School. We take children from 3 to 11 in two departments: the Pre-Preparatory School (3 - 7) and the Preparatory School (7 - 11). The Pre-Prep is housed in a large Victorian house and the Prep in an adjoining £4.5 million extension completed in March 2004.

The whole is set in 45 acres of grounds, used for playing fields by the Junior and Senior Schools. The Senior School is situated in the centre of Worcester and there are very close links between the two, although the two Headmasters are autonomous of one another under one Governing Body.

The Grange is part way through a major expansion programme. The School is structured as follows:

Nursery and Kindergarten (c.40 children)
Reception (3 forms of 15 children)
Year 1 (3 forms of 14 children)
Year 2 (3 forms of 15 children)
Year 3 (3 forms of 18 children)
Year 4 (3 forms of 18 children)
Year 5 (3 forms of 19 children)
Year 6 (3 forms of 20 children)

Children are taught in forms throughout the school, with a growing emphasis placed on subject specialism in the higher years. There are music specialists who teach class music throughout the School, and a number of staff swap classes to exploit their individual strengths.

Entry to Years 1 - 6 is by assessment: in the early part of this school this is informal; from Year 3 upwards we use a written assessment.

The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with the addition of French. A number of schemes are in place including Jolly Phonics in the Early Years, and Nelson English and Abacus Maths throughout the school. We have a strong tradition of after school clubs and many children stay to these or to supervised prep or childcare. The school day runs from 8.45 a.m. until 3.30 p.m., but children are on site between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.
